Santa Barbara, CA (5/25/2020) – A defensive lineman from Valley Christian High in San Jose recovered from a coma after sustaining a serious brain injury in a rollover accident in Santa Barbara. The crash happened in May on Highway 101 South in Goleta.

According to his family, Kyane Schmidt was ejected from his vehicle in a single-car accident more than two months ago. He was rushed to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where he was treated for two fractured ribs, internal bleeding, and brain swelling. Audrey Hutton, Schmidt’s mother, announced on July 18 that Kyane was scheduled to be released on July 30 after making a miraculous recovery.

Schmidt was a first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League offensive lineman in 2018 and was a walk-on last year for the San Jose Spartans. He was switched to the defensive line in 2019.
